Quilt Prep Guide

01

1. The Quilt Top

  1. 1

    Press All Seams

Press seams flat. This prevents the needle from "hopping" and ensures a smoother stitch.

  2. 2

    Clip Loose Threads

Trim any dangling threads, especially dark threads behind light fabrics, as they can show through.

  3. 3

    Square Up

Ensure your quilt top is as square as possible. This helps prevent "wavy" borders and pleats.

  4. 4

    Mark the Top

If your quilt has a specific orientation, pin a small note saying "TOP" to the upper edge.

Important.

The 4-Inch Rule

Your quilt backing and batting MUST be at least 4 inches larger than your quilt top on ALL sides.

Example

Top: 60" x 70"

Backing: 68" x 78"

2. The Backing & Batting

  1. A

    Seam Your Backing

If you need to seam your backing, use a 1/2" seam allowance and press it open.

  2. B

    Remove Selvages

Remove selvages from any internal seams in the backing fabric to prevent pulling.

  3. C

    Check for Wrinkles

Press or steam your backing to remove wrinkles and ensure a smooth surface.

A few extra minutes of preparation helps create a better quilting experience and a more beautiful finished quilt!

Shipment Checklist

Ready to send it? I recommend packing the quilt in a clean plastic bag inside of a sturdy box. I also recommend using a shipping service that provides tracking. When I return your quilt I will do the same and provide you with the tracking information.
